Ping Coombes Video Promo Shorts

Capturing the warmth and passion of an innovative MasterChef Winner

The challenge

Ping wanted her viewers to feel the true essence of what it is like to experience her Makan Supper Clubs, or to cook with her recipes. Given Ping’s highly personable approach to everything she does, we needed to intimately capture what makes her tick and what drives her passion for Malaysian cooking.

That Media Thing’s brief was to create video and photo assets to support the promotion of Ping’s Makan Supper Clubs, as well as conduct both an interview and a recipe video for Crumbs Magazine.

As the name suggests, At Home with Ping gave us an unprecedented opportunity to capture an intimate interview in a low-light lounge setting with a thoroughly relaxed subject, where you could quite easily be having a cuppa with a good friend. We then moved into her well-lit modern kitchen for the technically slick and stunning visuals designed to immortalise one of Ping’s best-known recipes. Particular focus was placed on capturing highly detailed cooking sounds to bring the viewer into the room with Ping.

The Makan Supper Club video experience was a restaurant location shoot in two parts. Leveraging the lush afternoon light, we first captured the preparation and anticipation for the main event with insights into the people that made it happen. We then put the heartfelt joy of the attending diners on camera with a handheld shooting style that placed you in amongst the crowd.

"That Media Thing were a pleasure to work with. For me the thing that stood out was that they listened to what I wanted to achieve and did ample research into who I am and what my cooking style is. The result is that they produced videos that captured me in my truest form, and that no other person or company has ever done before! I remembered the first time I watched the video - I blubbered like a baby!"
